Why choose Koh Samui for TEFL?
Koh Samui is the third largest island in Thailand and until only a few decades ago, it had little connection with the mainland. It has a relatively unspoiled flavor with gorgeous white sand beaches, coconut plantations and nearby coral reefs.
Economic growth has brought development to the island and there is much to see and do on Samui. A largely coastal ring road loops around the island making exploration easy, and if the main island is not enough for you, Koh Samui is in the middle of some sixty additional islands which make up the Ang Thong National Marine Park.
The central feature of the 15 km diameter island is the Khao Pom peak – covered in a riot of green jungle. Nathon is the old capital and is the main port and commercial center of activity on the island. It has ample evidence of the exotic history of the island with a blend of native and Chinese influences.
Each beach in Samui is effectively its own town, similar to Phuket Island. Since the earliest backpackers arrived in the late 70s on coconut boats, the island has continued to grow and prosper as a thriving tourist destination. Samui can be a refuge of picturesque beauty with the amazing variety of tropical scenery: waterfalls, coral, beaches and beautiful clear water.
On the northeast, Chaweng Beach is the most energetic and happening region of Koh Samui. It has every kind of tourist amenity imaginable including restaurants, lodging and entertainment venues and nightclubs. In the evenings, the party is centered on Chaweng's beach road with a glorious mix of shoppers, fun seekers and party goers. Lamai is also on the east coast and is a little more sedated and less crowded. Maenam is more quiet and relaxed, with a traditional Thai community still intact and thriving alongside the island's best resort and golf course.
Ang Thong National Marine Park is one of the primary attractions of Koh Samui and there are also numerous Buddhist temples, an aquarium and tiger zoo, plus the big Buddha statue and the “grandfather & grandmother” stones. Samui has numerous attractions featuring animals, and there is ample opportunity to try out some Thai kickboxing, cooking or massage.
The shopping on Samui is a mix of modern western offerings with traditional boutiques featuring Thai handicrafts. Samui is known for her silk, lacquerware, jewelry and arts. While the south of Thailand is a mix of Buddhists, Thai Chinese, Muslims and the traditional sea faring gypsies, there is little tension among people on the island, who live harmoniously.
Koh Samui is an international destination popular with tourists and travelers from all over the world. There is so much to do that 4 weeks will simply not be enough time to experience all this tropical island has to offer.
